Les Paul: Invented Here

Wikipedia recognizes him as “one of the most important figures in the development of modern electric musical instruments and recording techniques.” Indeed, Les Paul, invented reverb, sound-on-sound and multi-track recording. On a mission to create “a radical new sound,” the multi-talented guitarist developed not only new ways of—and new equipment for—recording music but also new instruments. Most notably: the solid-body electric guitar that would bear his name and that legions of jazz, blues, country, and rock musicians would zealously adopt. Now Paul and his technical team have tapped the Mac, Final Cut Pro, and Soundtrack Pro to help tell the story about how he brought his radical new sound to life.Date: 19. Oktober 2007 23:46:22 MESZ

In my view, Leopard is better and faster than Vista, with a set of new features that make Macs even easier to use.” Among the more than 300 new features available in Leopard, Mossberg singles out as “marquee features” Time Machine, Cover Flow, and Quick Look.” And he was impressed that “every piece of software and hardware I tried on two Leopard-equipped Macs—a loaned laptop from Apple and my own upgraded iMac—worked fine, exhibiting none of the compatibility problems that continue to plague Vista.”Date: 25. You can hover over these thumbnails to scroll through multi-page documents; if it’s a movie file, you can even play the film clip in Finder.” Stacks “another useful addition to Leopard, is a virtual ‘stack’ of documents that lives in the dock area, giving you one-click access to files.” “For me,” Beaumont states, “the stand-out feature is Time Machine,” but she’s also impressed that with Boot Camp built-in, Leopard becomes “the first Apple operating system that will also allow you to install a Windows operating system alongside it.”Date: 25. Time Machine, which offers “the shortest setup of any backup system in history.” And Quick Look, which lets you “view the contents of a document’s icon at full size, right at the desktop, without having to open the program that created it.” Pogue says “it’s fantastic.”Date: 25. Apple’s Leopard Server offers numerous advantages over Microsoft’s Windows Server, concludes Computerworld’s Ryan Faas. The unlimited client version of Mac OS X Xerver “provides organizations with significantly more room to grow. There is no limit to the number of users or for replication to additional servers. “ And “more importantly, Apple has designed Leopard Server specifically for smaller organizations that have little or no IT staffers.” “Given the added possibilities that Mac OS X Server offers beyond simple client management,” Faas concludes it “worth consideration in many organizations, ranging from small businesses to enterprise networks.”Date: 6. Leopard Server “sleek, fast and business-ready—even for mixed environments”

Calling it a “sexy beast,” Joe Hernick (networkcomputing.com) considers Mac OS X Server 10.5 “a substantial upgrade to Apple’s server offering, and we recommend shops running 10.4 to investigate.” In fact, Hernick find it “ready for work. The e-mail platform connects to Active Directory and bundles AV and anti-spam software without pesky client access licenses. A spiffed-up calendar application can serve as a group scheduler. VPN services can host 500 users per Intel Xserve. In a first for Apple, IP failover provides high availability, and TimeMachine enables easily deployed server-based client backup. Leopard Server can even mimic an NT domain controller.”Date: 6. November 2007 23:08:08 MEZ

Farhad Manjoo (Salon) makes a compelling case. “If we’re going just by what’s better—the ages-old Mac-vs.-PC debate is over. Long over. Yell it from the rooftops; The Mac has won.” Now’s the right time “to buy an Apple computer,” proclaims Manjoo. “Indeed, it’s been that time for the past five years.” After all, “its Macintosh business is now in league with that of the biggest PC companies in the world.” And “everyone who’s used it agrees that Leopard, the operating system that Apple released late last month, is to its chief rival, Microsoft’s Windows Vista, roughly as Richard Wagner is to Richard Marx.” Manjoo even takes the opportunity to “put to rest the myth that an Apple computer will set you back more than a Windows PC.
